The issue within the foster care system comes from the client and worker relationship. Children are not comfortable expressing themselves to the assigned worker because the relationship is not there. As social workers understand, no two clients' relationships with us will look the same. Some client relationships take longer to build than others, but keeping the client comfortable is essential. Respect goes a long way and looks different from person to person. One of the most significant issues I would like to focus on is having my coworkers understand that our clients are people. People in this field are trained not to be biased but develop bias opinions with interactions with clients. This causes the client's professional relationship to deteriorate before they can even work together.
